Harrison Finds Another Gear To Claim 4A Title

The top runner in New Mexico, Kashon Harrison, proved on Saturday why he’s one of the top prep runners in the country. At the New Mexico state cross country championships, Harrison a senior from Kirtland Central, won the 4A crown in 15 minutes and 27.35 seconds at Rio Rancho High. His time was the fastest since 2012, according to Albuquerque Journal.

Harrison is the reigning Foot Locker West champion.

In the team race, Los Alamos edged out Albuquerque Academy 42-49, ending Albuquerque’s bid for four straight titles.

The 4A girls title went to Albuquerque Academy with 31 points as senior Zoe Hunter led the way for the Chargers, winning in 18:56.6. This was the third state title in a row for the team. 

In 5A boys, Cleveland’s Yonas Haile won the individual title again, crossing the line in 15:49.5. Cleveland also won the team title with 62 points, repeating as state champs.

In 5A girls action, Eldorado’s Jasmine Turtle-Morale led her team to a victory as she won in 18:22.45. Eldorado placed five in the top 20 to score 57 points and edge out Cleveland (65 points). 

In 3A action, Sandi Prep runners swept the individual titles as senior Epherem Zerai win the boys race in 16:23.85, while junior Skyler Gee claimed the girls title in 20:15.1. 

The Zuni boys won the 3A team title with 40 points, placing four runners in the top 15. Robertson held off Zuni in the girls team race, 87-92. Robertson had two runners in the top 10 and three in the top 15. 

Led by junior Galvin Curley (16:14.15), Navajo Pine placed three runners in the top five to score 31 points and win the 1A/2A team crown. 

In the girls race, it was a tight battle as Pecos beat out ATC School, 36-39, for the 1A/2A crown. Sophomore Vanessa Dominguez led the charge for Pecos as she won the race in  20:24.
